PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - It took four different trucks to haul away 60 dogs seized from a Providence home Wednesday afternoon.
This case of apparent animal hoarding was uncovered at a single-family home on Phebe Street, in the Wanskuk section of the city.
Animal Control from three communities converged on the home, as well as officials from the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals . They removed about 60 dogs in four different trucks.
Investigators say the dogs appear to be healthy.
"They appear to all be in fairly good condition," said Pawtucket Animal Control officer John Holmes, who brought about 30 of the dogs to his city's shelter. "I didn't see anything that raised a red flag other than the large number of dogs."
Most of the dogs are small breeds, such as chihuahuas and dachshunds. Some of them were newborn puppies, and a few of the dogs appeared to be pregnant.
The case remains under investigation.
