MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Despite rain delays, cold weather and snow, one downtown merchant said Mardi Gras business has been good. The crowds have been smaller, but with the weather this cold, people are looking for a place to stay warm before the parades roll. That's driving them into local spots.
Mardi Gras is about more than moonpies and beads, it's about spending money. It is also a big money maker for businesses.
"Helps us tremendously," said Kay Previto, owner of Veets Bar and Grill on South Royal Street. "Mardi Gras carries us through the year."
Veets Bar and Grill sits right on Royal Street, which gives it a bit of an advantage, since the parades roll right by.
"Route really helps us. If they took it away, it would hurt us," said Previto.
Even though crowds are smaller, Kay says business has been just as good, or even better.
The Infant Mystics will parade at 6:30 Monday night. The first parade on Fat Tuesday is Order of Athena, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
